Illamasqua’s own description:
“The first fragrance from Illamasqua, Freak is a concoction of dangerously exotic unconventional flowers that Illamasqua has unashamedly blended together to celebrate the night.”

Poison Hemlock, Datura and Queen of the Night blossom, caress and kiss.
Aromas of Frankincense, Oud and Myrrh, addictively mesmerises and captures the senses
First of all, the unboxing experience with this was unreal. I spent approximately 10 minutes unpacking, studying the box, unboxing and reboxing(?), and just.. Well, exploring. The way there’s a moon printed behind the perfume is such a gorgeous detail. I love when brands spend time on their products – not just the final product, but the whole thing.
The bottle itself is a blackened purple; it looks black, but hold it against some light and it turns into this blackened plum purple colour. It’s shaped like a square, with the right bottom corner cut off, so it rests gently on that, which makes it look rather interesting. Like it might tip over, but alas – it does not. Then there’s the snail. I always forget the tiny snail, and it really is a cute but different detail.
There’s no doubt about it; it’s a unisex perfume! A scary word for some, but Illamasqua really nails it. I’ve thought about having a male friend try wearing it for a day, to find out what it smells like on guys. On my to do list. Back to the scent description. You can tell immediately that it’s unisex; there’s something overpowering about that first spritz, full of seductively sweet floral notes, and still quite a masculine aftershave vibe. First time I wore it, it kinda freaked me out. Some people say it’s very floral and light on them; I find it very oriental, rich, and a bit spicy. While it starts out a bit sharp, it quickly simmers down to something sweet, and you can smell the Frankincense, which alongside Oud (Agarwood) and Myrrh is the heart of the perfume. Together they make for a warm, comforting, yet sensual, interesting, and bold long lasting perfume. I think either it gives you a headache, or you walk around sniffing your wrists all day.
If you like bold, unisex, dark, and mysterious, then this is for you. I highly recommend trying this on first before buying it, wearing it for a few hours, and seeing how it sets on you. For me, it’s not an everyday perfume, it’s kept for special occasions, as it’s so different, and it really demands to be noticed.
Here’s the video Illamasqua released for the fragrance launch. “I am bottled midnight“ is definitely my new favourite perfume description.
Lots of love,
